Before I show you what I made during this weekend’s freezer-cooking marathon, I want to start by giving you an idea of what I had on hand when I made my meal plan. Back in December, during the craziness of the holiday season, I got an awesome deal on meat that I never had a chance to share with you. On December 8th, I got $102.32 worth of meat for $41.65:
This deal was the result of excellent timing. I entered the store with a coupon for $5 off any $25 Rancher’s Reserve beef purchase, from a pamphlet that Safeway was giving out during their grand re-opening. When I got my shopping cart, I found a second $5/25 meat coupon on the ground. And I got to the meat department right as they were putting out a goldmine of clearance beef, including a lot of nice steaks – so between the discounts on the beef and my coupons, I saved $60.67. The grand total for all my groceries on this trip was less than $56 – two of the items rang up at the wrong price, and I don’t recall the exact amount of the refund I received, but I believe it was around $3.00; which made the final cost about $53 altogether. The other deals I got included free clementines, free soup, free enchiladas, free peanut butter, free apple juice, and more – you can click here and here to see my receipts.
So as you can imagine, my freezer is still stuffed! The freezer cooking plan I came up with utilized some of this meat – and tomorrow, I’ll show you what fresh ingredients I bought to supplement what I had in my stockpile.

Freezer cooking, once-a-month-cooking (OAMC), make-ahead meals – whatever you call it, making pre-prepared dishes that you can pull out of the freezer at a moment’s notice can save you time and money. I’ve done this on and off for years; long before I started clipping coupons, I would make freezer meals in order to avoid the “Takeout trap”. When life gets extraordinarily busy, there isn’t always a lot of time to cook, and it’s too easy to cruise through the drive-through. By making time to prepare food in advance, I can just pull something out of the freezer and heat it up. By making it myself, I’m able to control what goes into the food, instead of buying a TV dinner. And of course, avoiding fast food and expensive pre-packaged foods saves you money, not to mention the fact that freezer cooking is a great way to use up food and take advantage of sales on perishable items.
I have declared this a freezer cooking weekend, and plan to assemble a batch of meals over the next two days. My work schedule for the next few weeks is shaping up to be very packed, so this is a great way to take some of the burden off – without resorting to takeaway. I’m going to share photos and recipes for what I make, so stay tuned! In the meantime, if you’d like to learn more about freezer cooking, I recommend these sites:

In my article “How To Throw a Sponsored Party”, I talked about the fact that I am a member of the word-of-mouth marketing panel, BzzAgent. I also mentioned how one of my recent campaigns with them involved me getting free bags of rice, along with a stack of free product coupons to pass out to my friends. I still have a few of these coupons left, so I thought it would be fitting to hold a giveaway for one of the coupons here!
One lucky reader will win two coupons – one for a free 2 lb. package of Mahatma rice, and one for a free 28 oz. package of Mahatma brown rice. Both coupons expire 6/30/10.
One of the reasons I love being a member of BzzAgent is because it compliments my frugal lifestyle. I’ve been putting my free bags of rice to use by making some of my favorite meals – for a quick weekday lunch, I’ll stick a few cups of Mahatma in the rice cooker, and add some onion, grated carrot, garlic, and Chipotle seasoning salt to lend extra flavor to the rice as it cooks. I serve it with refried beans – and then we’ll roll the leftovers up in a tortilla with some cheese the next day for another meal. So on that note, I’d like to know:
What is your favorite frugal dish? Just leave a comment on this post telling me, and you will be entered to win!
Want extra entries? Do any of the following, and leave a separate comment for each one:
2. Link to this post on your blog, then come back here and leave me the link! 3. Write about this on Twitter, then come back and leave me the link to your tweet! One Twitter entry per person. 4. Post my button on your website – just copy and paste the following code, and let me know where you put it:
Bonus: I’m also holding a Mahatma coupon giveaway over on Contest Corner, so feel free to enter that one as well to double your chances!
Rules, regulations, and other important stuff: Giveaway ends on March 25th at 11:59 PM, PST. Winner will be chosen the following day via Random.org. Contest is open to US residents and APO/FPO addresses. BzzAgent provided me with two free bags of rice and free product coupons because of my participation in their program. I have decided to share one of my coupons as a giveaway here.

Don’t have time to use coupons? Well, if you could get free groceries in ten minutes – even if you know nothing about coupons – would you have the time for that? Then read on.
Many people are hesitant to start using coupons because of one thing: Time. Coupons seem overwhelming, and you don’t have the time to learn all that stuff and spend hours pinching pennies, right? But you don’t have to. Anyone can save money on their grocery bill immediately by taking a few minutes to read the following tips and click on a few links.
Step 1: Sign Up For Free Product Coupons Online
One effective advertising method that companies employ is offering limited-time free coupon offers on their websites. I love these offers, because it takes no more than 2 minutes to fill out a quick form and receive a free product coupon in return. I find out about these promotions by surfing my favorite frugal blogs, and then I write about these offers right here on Super Coupon Girl. Click on the “Free Coupons” link to go straight to that category and browse through the free offers – I post these links whenever I find them, so it is updated frequently.
Maybe you think these coupons will never arrive, or it’s “too good to be true”? Then I invite you to check out the following shopping trips where I have used coupons that I received from these type of offers. I have gotten free coffee creamer, free Always pads and Herbal Essences conditioner, free Starbucks ice cream, free Cascade rinse agent, free Dr. Pepper, and free clam chowder, free brownie mix, free candy bars, free hot dogs, and a free meatless vegetarian entree…I could go on, but you get the picture!
Step 2: Register For These Panels
Another way that advertisers spread the word about their products is by creating online panels that consumers can sign up for to receive coupon mailings. I am a member of the following websites, and consistently receive coupons in the mail for totally free products. The panels are free to sign up for, and require nothing on your part other than registering:
Vocalpoint
Pssst…Network
Thanks to these panels, I have received free Kashi cereal, free Rice Krispies, free frozen vegetables, and more.
Bonus Tip: Before you start signing up for coupons, I highly recommend setting up a free secondary email account with Gmail or Hotmail. Use this email address when you register for free offers, and you will keep your primary email free from getting cluttered with unwanted newsletters.
There are other ways to get free product coupons, which I will touch on in later articles; but I wanted to stick to these two tips for this particular post because they are effortless and require minimum time investment – so that truly anyone can start getting free groceries right away.

The last time I posted a Victoria’s Secret deal, many of you wrote in to tell me how it saved you money – so naturally I had to share this one with you as well! For today only, March 12th, Victoria’s Secret is offering free shipping when you use coupon code SHIPFREE. There are lots of items on clearance, and every order will receive a “Secret Rewards Card”, which is a store credit that you can use online or in-store from April 1st through the 30th. You won’t know the amount of the gift card until you make a purchase with it, but it will be valued between $10, $50, $100, or $500 – so at the very least, you’ll get a $10 credit with your order. More details on the Secret Rewards program can be found here. I’m not sure how redeeming it will work, since it says the value is not revealed until checkout, but I imagine you’d be able to edit your order during the checkout process – IE, if I buy a $10 bra and find out that my credit is worth $50, I would think that I could click “continue shopping” or something of that nature and add other products to the order. However, I’ll have no way of knowing until I try it, so fair warning!!
Here’s some deal ideas:
1. Head over to either Ebates or ShopAtHome, as they both offer 2% cashback at Victoria’s Secret. If you are new to these sites, you will also receive a $5 bonus for signing up – read my article “How I Save Money With Online Rebates” for more info.
2. Click over to the clearance section of Victoria’s Secret and check out the prices. They have panties on sale for 5/$15, clearance beauty items for $2.99 and up, and lots of other stuff.
3. Use coupon code SHIPFREE at checkout.
4. Receive inexpensive clothing and the Secret Rewards Card for $10 or higher.
To the best of my knowledge, Victoria’s Secret enforces a limit on these promotions to one per customer; so if you plan on buying five items, you will receive one rewards card. From what I understand, you cannot split your order into five transactions to get five rewards cards – your orders would be canceled. Just FYI!
This deal came at just the right time for me, because I was at Ross earlier in the week looking for a hoodie. I really need a new one, but I’ve been having a hard time finding any that suit my style. I found a hoodie in the PINK line for $14.99 that I really like – and the hoodies I saw at Ross were $20+, so it’s cheaper as well. (I just hope the zipper on this one is a little more durable than the last VS hoodie I bought!) I will also get a small rebate from Ebates, as well as the mystery gift card – I’ll keep you updated and let you know if the card results in any good deals.
Big thanks to Common Sense With Money for the info on this deal!

As you may recall, I’ve been dabbling with container gardening for a while – first with garlic, and then with radishes, fava Beans, and corn salad. My last garden update was full of promise, but a cold snap soon froze my little budding plants and they quickly died off. However, I was pleasantly surprised to see that a few little corn salad plants hung on – here’s how my planters looked yesterday:
I did a Google search on when to harvest corn salad (AKA mache), and found this helpful page over at The Victory Garden. Apparently, you can start using the leaves once they are 1-2 inches long – so I decided to make a little salad to go with yesterday’s lunch.
I tossed the salad with olive oil, sea salt, and pepper – recipe here – and served it with grapefruit and a grilled cheese sandwich. I made the sandwich with leftover bread from the birthday party, covered it in mozzarella and cooked it in olive oil and garlic. It was a yummy lunch; and would have been even better if I hadn’t bought “imitation” cheese by accident!
I’ve been meaning to re-plant more radishes and fava beans, since I still have plenty of seeds – I just haven’t gotten to it yet. With spring almost here, I’m looking forward to expanding my garden and planting new things. I’m a novice gardener, so it’s a fun learning experience!
Readers: how are your gardens coming along?

Last Thursday, I made a run to pick up supplies for Jai’s birthday party:
Total spent: $68.33 Total before coupons: $97.20 View receipt
The menu for this party consisted of Jai’s favorite foods: PB&J sandwiches and cheesecake! I always do a big spread for parties, so after working out the number of servings per cheesecake, I decided that I would need to make five. I listed out all the extra ingredients that I would need to buy, and I decided that going to Fred Meyer would be my best bet. As I mentioned in my article Five Strategies for Shopping Success, Fred Meyer has lower shelf prices than Safeway, but whether I shop there depends on the coupon deals at Safeway and the cost of gas vs. savings. In this instance, I needed many items which I had no coupons for, making the trip to Fred Meyer well worth my while.
And after all that careful price-checking of ingredients? I got to Fred Meyer and discovered pre-made, no-bake cheesecake mixes – including the crust, filling, and fruit topping – for a fraction of the price. I had no idea there was such a thing, and I was surprised to find a pre-made cheesecake so much cheaper. As a comparison, the seven no-bake mixes that I bought (I added two more because the serving size was different from my recipes) cost a total of $24.65, whereas the cost for the cream cheese by itself alone was $19.00.
So here’s the full list of what I picked up:
Five 1 pint, 9.36 fl. oz bottles of Star olive oil – on sale for $4.99 (originally priced at $9+), used five $4.00/1 coupons that I received for taking a survey – final price: .99 cents each, grand total $4.95 for five bottles. I got these coupons a while ago from a special limited-time survey promotion on Star’s website. I’ve been hanging on to them until I could find a good olive oil deal, and this was it. These generous bottles will last me a long time – and perfect timing too, since I just ran out of olive oil! 1 32 oz jar of grape jelly – gotta have this for PB&J! Price: $1.69 1 32 oz jar of Raspberry preserves – price: $3.29 1 32oz jar of Strawberry preserves – price: $3.29 3.16 lbs of bananas – we were running low on fruit. Price: $1.86 1.05 lbs of Braeburn apples – price: .82 cents .99 lbs of Granny Smith apples – price: .77 cents 6 grapefruit – price: $2.00 1 gallon of skim milk – on clearance for $1.49. I used about a gallon of milk just in making the bread and cheesecakes! 1 gallon of 2% milk – on clearance for $1.49 Half gallon of half & half – price: $4.19 (.20 cents more expensive than Safeway, but wouldn’t be worth the gas and time for a separate trip) 1 bottle of Seventh Generation dish soap – on sale for $3.49, used one free coupon that I earned through Recycle Bank – final cost: Free 7 boxes of no-bake cheesecake mix – total cost: $24.65 4 lbs of margarine – need this for baking – .79 cents each, final price: $3.16 5 lb bag of sugar – price: $2.39 1 package of Styrofoam cups – price: $1.49 Four 8-oz bags of cheese – $1.25 each, total price: $5.00 1 box of plastic spoons – price: $1.50 1 box of plastic forks – price: $1.50 1 tub of cat food – regularly priced at $1.49, used one free coupon found in the Fred Meyer coupon booklet – final price: Free 1 box of Green Giant “Just For One” frozen vegetables – on sale for $3.69, used one free coupon that I got through Psst… Network. Final price: Free 2 dozen eggs – on sale for $1.50 each, final price: $3.00
I also received a .20 cent credit for bringing my own bags.
Here’s how the party turned out:
A display case that I decorated for the party
Beverage station
Cheesecake table #1
Cheesecake table #2
PB&J table – I made five loaves of bread for the party, half of which I used for sandwiches, and half of which I set out as a “Self-serve” station for anyone who wanted to make their own creations.
We sent some food home with guests, and still had a huge plate of sandwiches left over. I’ve found that these are quite good toasted!
I spent $14.92 on the party decorations, $3.00 on plastic knives, and also $5.45 on an emergency bag of coffee – I hadn’t realized we were almost out when I went to Fred Meyer! So altogether, that’s $91.70 – which bought all the supplies for this party, as well as stocking the kitchen with some needed items. Given than this was a special event, provided more than enough food and drinks for 16 people and gave us leftovers en masse, I’m satisfied with how I budgeted it. We had so much fun and will always remember this party!
