Shopping Trip, April 19th

April 19th, 2012

As I mentioned in my last post, we’ve been eating a lot from the pantry for the last month or so, and we haven’t bought much at the store as a result. Today, I sent Jai to the store to pick up some milk, return some cans, and use a few free coupons:

Shopping trip, April 19th

Total spent: $6.70, put onto a gift card
Total before coupons/bottle return slips: $25.81
View receipt

1 can of Dole pineapple – regularly $1.79, used one free product coupon which I received through a Twitter party. Final price: Free!

1 package of Kraft Fresh Take Breadcrumb & Cheese mix – regularly $3.99, used one free product coupon which I received through the Kraft First Taste offer. Final price: Free!

2 dozen eggs – Regularly $1.59 each, used one printable coupon good for .55 cents off two dozen eggs. Final price: $2.63 for both cartons.

2 large bottles of Coffee-Mate – regularly $3.59 each, used two free coupons that Jai and I received from Coffee-Mate’s Free Flavor Friday promotion. Final price: Free!

1 gallon of milk – price: $2.69

2 packages of Stayfree – price: $3.49 each

Jai then used $5.60 in bottle return slips to bring the total down to $6.70.

Shopping Trip – April 4th

April 4th, 2012

Over the last two weeks or so, we’ve been doing an unofficial “Eat from the pantry” challenge to use up what we have on hand. This is a great way to both save money and clear out space. With what we have in the pantry, we’ve been making dishes like pasta, chili, burritos, sandwiches, etc. As a result, we’ve only stopped by the store to get milk & coffee creamer. Now that reserves are running a bit low, I sent Jai to the store this morning to take advantage of some sales and use some free product coupons. Here’s what he got:

Shopping trip, April 4th

Total spent: $7.37
Total before coupons: $29.63
View receipt

Got:

Three 4-lb bags of sugar – price: $1.99 each. This was a 24-hour sale good today only, so Jai stocked up on three bags because of the good price.

1 can of Libby’s pickled beets – regularly $1.99, used one free product coupon. Final price: Free. This coupon had no expiration date and has been in my stash for a long time – I got it through a Twitter party that I attended ages ago.

2 dozen eggs – regularly $1.59 each, used one .55 cents off two dozen coupon, which doubled. Final price: $1.06 and $1.07 each, respectively.

2.58 lbs of carrots – price: $1.52

1 bag of Ocean Spray Craisins – regularly $2.00, used one free product coupon. Final price: Free, plus the coupon appears to have taken off its maximum value, resulting in overage of $1.25. This came through a free sample offer on their Facebook page (Now expired) – I received a sample of Craisins plus the free coupon for another bag. I had no idea that the free sample came with a free coupon too, so that was a really nice surprise!

3 tubs of Sabra Hummus – regularly $4.99 each, used three free product coupons. Final price: Free. These coupons have also been in my stash for some time – I received them as part of a project I did on Contest Corner.

It also appears that the cashier doubled two other coupons in the transaction as well – I’m not sure why, since I wasn’t there.

Snagging Deals at Store Grand Openings

April 1st, 2012

ACE Hardware opened a new store in our town about a month ago, and we’ve popped in a few times to check out the selection and pick up items that we needed. On Friday morning, we stopped by to pick up some supplies for a repair that needs to be done. When we walked in, we found out that it was the store’s official “Grand Opening” party, and they were offering special events all weekend. We decided to space out the purchases that we needed and come back each day to take advantage of the good deals and promotions. Here’s a recap:

ACE Hardware purchases & freebies: Friday & Saturday

Friday: Bought a box of drywall screws which we needed for a repair for $5. The first 200 customers also received a free 5 gallon bucket in addition to free cake and coffee. There were also a selection of fun in-store sweepstakes which we entered.

Saturday: According to the store flier, the first 100 customers to come in on Saturday would receive a free tool bag, so we went in right as the store opened and got the tool bag, bought some masks which were also on our list, and received a few other fun freebies: A measuring tape, keychain, and pen. We also enjoyed free donuts and coffee. Later in the day, we returned to store because they were selling a hot dog & soda for .50 cents to benefit a local high school’s choir program. So we ate both our breakfast and lunch at the hardware store! 😉

ACE Hardware haul: Sunday

Sunday: We returned this morning to pick up the final freebie, a free utility knife for the first 175 customers. (This is a very nice knife!) Once again, we had complimentary coffee and donuts for breakfast. We also bought a wire brush that we needed, and as we stood in line, one of the employees came up and handed me a mystery goodie bag and said, “This is to thank you because you guys come in to our store regularly.” It was a bandana that contained a bunch of goodies: Push pins, a measuring tape, screws, a mini-screwdriver, contractor’s pencil, and a keychain. Was that nice of them, or what?

Contents of the goodie bag

Since we do so many DIY repairs and renovations, this was a productive and fun use of time – all of these freebies are things that we need and will use. It was smart thinking on ACE’s part to have such an elaborate grand opening – not only does it draw in customers, but it generates a lot of goodwill, and news travels fast in our small town! The store was packed full of customers making purchases this weekend, so I think this grand opening was a success for both the store and the customers.

Garden Update: Unintentional Carrots

March 22nd, 2012

I haven’t posted a garden update in almost a year and half. Due to my health issues, I’ve had to put a lot of things on the back burner, including my forays into gardening. My little container gardens are still on the back deck, and I figured that once I was feeling better I would pull out the weeds and try again. Jai has been keeping an eye on the garden, since the last batch of plants had apparently dropped some seeds that were starting to grow on their own. Yesterday afternoon, he walks in the house with this:

Unintentional Carrot

A carrot! Not only that, but a large, delicious carrot! And there are a few more growing in the containers as well. How my abandoned carrots from 2010 managed to re-seed themselves and grow through all kinds of crazy weather with no help is amazing. No wonder root vegetables are such a popular and plentiful crop to grow.

(The slice you see in the carrot is from where Jai was chopping it to eat, when I said: “Wait! I haven’t taken a picture of it yet!” Ah, life with a blogger. ;))

I find it hilarious that when I was tending my garden and trying to grow produce, I ended up with the smallest carrots ever. But after I completely abandon it, I suddenly end up with the nicest carrot I’ve ever grown! At this rate, if I continue to ignore my garden, I should end up with a bumper crop. 😉

Have you gotten any garden surprises lately?

Possible Free Kraft Cheese & Breadcrumb Mix Coupon

March 16th, 2012

Kraft Fresh Take Coupon Offer

This morning I logged into my Kraft First Taste account after getting an email about new coupon offers there, and I was able to register for a free coupon for Kraft Fresh Take Cheese & Breadcrumb Mix. I’m not sure how long this free coupon will be on offer or if it is available to every member, but I would advise logging in or creating an account to see if you can snag one, too. If you’re not familiar with Kraft First Taste, it’s a community that provides special offers to its members. There’s usually at least one or two printable coupons available, and I’ve gotten a few freebies like this one over the years, too.
