Shopping Trip, July 28th: How I Got Paid to Fill a Prescription & Bought $51.88 Worth of Groceries For $7.09

Friday, July 30th, 2010

On Wednesday, I headed to Rite Aid & Safeway to pick up some groceries and refill a prescription. I refilled my prescription for $7.69, and subsequently made a gift card profit that I used to buy $51.88 worth of groceries for $7.09:

Shopping trip, July 28th

I mentioned recently that I’ve been having some knee troubles. My doctor has me on a high dose of Naproxen – which is prescription strength Aleve – to help reduce the pain and swelling. I had originally filled the prescription at the pharmacy in the hospital, and since it was time to refill it, I printed this coupon on Rite Aid’s website good for a free $25 Rite Aid gift card when you transfer a prescription. I’ve talked about these sort of deals before – the last time was when I made a profit filling a prescription at Walgreens. If your prescription is affordable, it can be very worthwhile to transfer your RX to a new pharmacy so that you can take advantage of such offers; the most important thing is to make sure you check the price first, as prices can vary greatly from pharmacy to pharmacy. The cost to refill my Naproxen came to $7.69 – and I got a $25 Rite Aid gift card back for transferring the prescription, earning me a profit of $17.31! Click here to view my receipt.

Gift card in hand, I proceeded to pick up some groceries and household items. Since I knew I would be using a $25 gift card, I made sure beforehand to print off a coupon from RedPlum for $5 off your purchase of $25 or more. This way, I was able to buy $30 in groceries, use the coupon to bring it down to $25, then put the rest on my gift card!

Eggs, milk, coffee & more

Total spent: Zero out of pocket, put $24.98 on my gift card. And I got $4 in +UP Rewards back towards my next purchase!
Total before coupons: $31.98
View receipt

Got:

1 gallon of milk – price: $2.69
1 toilet brush & caddy – my free toilet brush from last year’s Target adventure broke, so it was time for a new one! Price: $8.49
4 pints of half & half – $1.29 each, final price: $5.16
1 shower cap – got this to use with a deep conditioning hair treatment to keep my hair healthy since I’m bleaching it! 😀 – price: $2.19
1 pair of rubber gloves – needed a new pair – price: $1.97
1 dozen eggs – price: $1.49
12 oz bag of Dunkin’ Donuts coffee – on sale for $6.99, used a $1/1 coupon from the 6/27 Red Plum newspaper insert, bringing the price down to $5.99; and I also received $1 in +UP Rewards back.
1 bottle of Colgate toothpaste – on sale for $3.00, used a $1/1 coupon from the 7/11 Smart Source newspaper insert to bring the price down to $2.00; and I received $3.00 in +UP Rewards back, making it free plus $1 profit!

You may be wondering what +UP Rewards are. This is essentially Rite Aid’s version of a catalina – when you purchase certain items, a reward prints out at the bottom of your receipt that can be used like cash towards your next purchase. Click here to read Deal Seeking Mom’s post for more info on this new program.

Since I had $4 in +UP Rewards, I took my purchases out to the car and went back in to do one more transaction:

Oatmeal, Ramen, garlic salt & chicken bouillon

Total spent: .75 cents out of pocket, and used the last .02 cents on my gift card
Total before coupons: $4.77
View receipt

1lb tub of oatmeal – price: $1.99
1 bottle of garlic salt – my new favorite thing to put on food! Price: .79 cents
1 bottle of chicken bouillon cubes – this container is full of bouillon cubes, and its .99 cent price tag made it a MUCH better deal than what I’ve bought at Safeway previously!
6-pack of Top Ramen – price: $1.00

I then used my $4 in +UP Rewards from the last transaction to bring my total down to .77 cents. I used the last .02 cents that remained on my gift card, and then paid .75 cents in cash.

Afterwards, I stopped by Safeway to pick up a few last supplies:

Produce, goat cheese, pizza

Total spent: $6.34
Total before coupons: $15.13
View receipt

Got:

1 Digiorno Deep Dish Pizza – originally $2.50, used one free coupon that I got through Facebook – final price: Free
2.26 lbs bananas – price: $1.56
1 cantaloupe – price: $2.00
4 ears of corn – price: $1.00
10 lbs of potatoes – price: $1.78
1 package of Chavrie Goat Cheese – regularly $6.29, used one free coupon from a recent offer – final price: Free

So I got $51.88 worth of groceries for $7.09 and one refilled prescription for $7.69, making my final expenditure for both groceries and RX $14.78.

My Famous Footwear Order

Famous Footwear

My Famous Footwear order has arrived – a pair of cute slippers & a reusable bag for .98 cents shipped. Not too shabby, especially since I have been wanting to pick up a new pair of slippers. They are pretty small – the only size they had left was “Medium”, and I had no idea what shoe size that equated to – but I can still squeeze my feet into them, so it’s all good!

Readers, did you order anything from Famous Footwear with the $10 off $10 coupon? What did you get?

How to Get Free Coupons From Facebook – When You Have No Interest in Social Networks

Tuesday, July 20th, 2010

Money Saving Mom posted a link to a great article on For The Mommas yesterday titled “I Want the Freebies… I Just Don’t Want to Join Facebook”. In this article, she discusses ways to maximize your privacy settings on Facebook, for those who may be hesitant to join but are interested in all the coupon offers that are becoming available. Now, it’s worth pointing out that Facebook are somewhat notorious for frequently changing their privacy settings and policy, so if it’s vital that you remain anonymous, Facebook may not be for you – although I think that could be said of most things on the Internet, whether we like it or not. But I think she makes a good point that you can take advantage of the good deals without having to be active in other ways or add 500 friends.

Social networks are exploding in popularity, and advertisers are taking note – in the last few months, there have been offers on Facebook for free pizza, free shampoo, free macaroni & cheese, free Vitaminwater, free Oreos – you get the idea. So if you don’t have a Facebook account, it’s some interesting food for thought!

All You Challenge Recap

All You Grocery Challenge

The All You Grocery Challenge has officially ended! The last two days of meals weren’t very noteworthy, because Jai and I both came down with colds, so we didn’t eat a lot because of that; getting sick really kills my appetite. I bought two boxes of crackers on Friday night – crackers are my go-to food when I’m sick – so we pretty much just ate those and leftovers from that big batch of chicken casserole that I made.
Unfortunately, I messed up the chicken soup that I was trying to make, so I ended up having to toss it!

The two boxes of crackers that I bought cost $3.98, which brings my final total for Week 4 to $21.63. Our allotment for the Grocery Challenge was $25 per person per week, a total of $50 maximum for our two-person household.

Week 3 total: $23.00
Week 2 total: $48.34
Week 1 total: $39.20

Grand total spent on food during the 4-week grocery challenge: $132.17. In addition to feeding both of us, we had guests over for meals several times during the challenge.

Grocery Challenge Meals: Day 25

Thursday, July 15th, 2010

Here’s our menu for Day 25 of the All You Grocery Challenge:

For breakfast, we toasted the leftover Blueberry muffins from Day 24. For lunch, I took the remaining cooked chicken in the fridge and whipped up a casserole, served with homemade bread and iced tea:

Casserole & bread

We had company, so this served 3 with generous leftovers. I actually made 3 casseroles, because I had so many ingredients! The casserole consisted of two boxes of cooked spaghetti, chopped chicken from about 3 and half breasts, a little flaxseed, and seasonings. I scooped it into casserole dishes, topped with shredded cheese, and prepared two cups of Shirley J Universal Sauce, which I poured on top. I added a little more seasoning, and baked at 350 degrees until it looked ready.

Casserole & bread

Since we had so much casserole, we ended up eating it again for dinner. I know that’s redundant, but we didn’t mind. I was too tired at the end of the day to care!

I put one casserole dish inside a ziploc bag and froze it – I can’t find a definitive answer on how well cooked spaghetti in a creamy sauce freezes, so this will be my experiment so that I can find out. Should be interesting!! The remaining casserole and a half went into the fridge for future meals this week.

Chicken Start of chicken broth

When I was cutting the meat off the chicken breasts, I saved the bones, skins, and other little leftover pieces, and put them back in the stockpot to make soup. I added cold water, leftover celery and carrot sticks from Tuesday’s lunch, seasonings, and let it simmer all day. I took it off the heat before I went to bed, and put it back on the stove this morning to simmer again. My plan is to strain out the bones and serve it as a nice chicken soup for dinner – I’ll keep you posted on how it turns out!

Grocery Challenge Meals: Days 23 & 24

Wednesday, July 14th, 2010

We’re in the last stretch of the All You Grocery Challenge – here’s our menu for Monday & Tuesday:

Day 23:

Sandwich station

We had company at lunchtime, so I set out a sandwich station of homemade bread, deli ham, shredded cheese, lettuce, salad, juice and shortbread cookies.

Steak and cheese quesadilla Steak and cheese quesadilla

We had one steak left over, so I chopped it up for dinner and made steak quesadillas flavored with chipotle seasoning salt and leftover taco sauce packets from Taco Bell! We also had a little bit of potato salad left, so we had that as well as some green salad for the side dish.

Day 24:

Breakfast

I made blueberry muffins for breakfast, using this recipe.

Blueberry muffins

We had company, so for lunch I set out another sandwich station of homemade bread, deli ham, lettuce, shredded cheese, deviled eggs, veggies with Blue Cheese dressing for dip, iced tea, shortbread cookies & muffins.

Sandwiches & more

Enchiladas

For dinner, I chopped up some of the clearance chicken that I had bought & boiled the night before and made chicken enchiladas. Last year, I won a package of Shirley J Universal Sauce from Desperately Seeking Deals, and the recipe that I used was adapted from the recipe leaflet that came with the sauce. I took three tortillas and filled them with the cooked, chopped chicken, a little cheese, more sauce packets from Taco Bell, and Chipotle seasoning salt, wrapped them up, and placed them in a pan. I prepared 1 cup of the Shirley J sauce, covered the tortillas with it, and topped with a bit of cheese and more taco sauce. I was concerned that the recipe wouldn’t have enough cheese – the recipe called for 4 cups, and I had maybe 1 cup of cheese left at the most. However, the sauce was so creamy that it made up for it – Jai actually thought that I must have put a lot of different cheeses in it. The enchiladas were very nice!

And by the way, in case you’re wondering why I have so many Taco Bell sauce packets: No, I do not raid all of their condiments! It’s just that we’ve paid a few visits through Taco Bell’s drive-thru in recent history (ahem) when our schedules were nutty, and every time they would stuff our bags with about 20 packets of sauce. So, I saved the leftover packets and put them in a ziploc bag in the fridge. Waste not, want not!
