Got:

One 10 pound bag of potatoes
4 trial sized packets of Airborne – on sale for $2.19, used four $2/1 coupons from the 9/7 Smart Source newspaper inserts. Free plus .31 cents of overage each after doubles.
12 boxes of instant Quaker oatmeal – on sale for $1.57, used 12 $1/1 coupons. .07 cents a box after doubles!

Safeway is running a “48 hour sale” today and tomorrow. The Quaker oatmeal is one of the promotional items, temporarily reduced to $1.57. There are lots of $1 off coupons out there, so here’s a list:

Printables:

$1 off any Quaker instant oatmeal – this has a generous print limit, so you can print 8 per computer! Just hit the back button after each coupon prints. Thanks to Abundant Food Savings for the link!

You can also print two more from the Quaker Oatmeal website. There is another printable here, but I can’t get it to work. Thanks to Hot Coupon World for these links!

Inserts:

A coupon for $1/1 High Fiber Quaker Instant Oatmeal can be found in the 10/19 Red Plum and 9/7 Red Plum newspaper inserts.

A coupon for $1/1 Quaker Simple Harvest Multi-Grain cereal (which is also on sale for $1.57) can be found in the 9/21 Smart Source newspaper inserts.

At .07 cents a box after doubles, this is a great stock-up price. Each box contains at least 8 (and sometimes 10) packets, so that’s less than a penny per serving. That’s a pretty cheap breakfast, and the boxes I bought don’t expire until 2010!
There was lots of oatmeal in stock at my store, but if yours is all out, be sure to get a rain check so that you can take advantage of this deal!

Also of interest to Oregonians – it was mentioned on Hot Coupon World that there is another $10/50 Safeway coupon coming out in Sunday’s Oregonian. I haven’t seen the Sunday paper yet to confirm, but I thought I should give you guys the heads-up! This could come in handy for the “Home For The Holidays” promo. For more inspiration on how to use this coupon for maximum savings, check out the great tips in this article by SCG reader Angela, on getting the most out of your $10/50 Safeway coupon.

Thursday night’s dinner:

Potato Pizzas with Roasted Garlic Lemon Broccoli, served with a bottle of homemade wine that we were given.
I topped the potatoes with “pizza sauce”, fresh tomato slices, onion, mushrooms, and black olives. I substitute Ragu pasta sauce every time a recipe calls for any kind of tomato sauce – I figure that tomato sauce is tomato sauce, and I have a cupboard full of it, so I may as well use it. I quite like the extra flavor that it lends, and I have yet to find a recipe that it didn’t work in.
This tasted more like yummy baked potatoes than pizza, partly because I just cut them in half instead of slicing them thinly as recommended in the recipe.
I love this broccoli recipe, but I’m still tweaking it. It seems like the broccoli is either underdone or too brown, so I’m looking for that happy medium. This is also partly due to my whacked out oven – I need a new one, so let me know if you see any coupons for ovens!

Yesterday’s brunch:

Oven baked banana pancakes.

This was interesting. I was using a pancake recipe from my favorite Betty Crocker cookbook, when I accidentally misread 1 tablespoon of sugar as 1 cup. OOPS! To try and compensate, I added more flour and eggs. I had also put in two organic bananas, apple butter, nutmeg, cinnamon, allspice, a dash of vanilla, and some lemon flavoring. It certainly had a very interesting texture when I pulled it out of the oven. It was very dense – definitely more like a banana bread than a pancake. I didn’t care for it, but apparently Jai liked it, because he was snacking on the leftovers all day.

Yesterday’s dinner:

Vegan Chili, cornbread and pineapple chunks. This was served with beer, which was also given to us!

Yum! This was good. This isn’t spicy in the slightest, which is perfect for me. And yes, I used Ragu pasta sauce in this, too!! It hasn’t failed me yet!
All those corn muffin mixes that I got free over the summer came in handy for this meal. If you’re wondering about the pineapple – I read somewhere that serving pineapple as a garnish with bean dishes is supposed to make it easier to digest. Who knows if that’s actually true, but I love pineapple so it doesn’t matter! I’d like to give a quick shout out to The Glamorous WAHM, since I won the jar of pineapple and some other fruits in a giveaway that she hosted recently.

As usual, this made a ton of food. We had leftovers for lunch this afternoon, and there’s still a lot of cornbread left.

You may have noticed that both of these dinners were from vegan recipe websites (although not 100% vegan the way I prepared them). I’m going to experiment with making a few meals like this every week, in an effort to eat more veggies and cut some calories. We’re in the thick of the holiday season, so I figured I better start my new year’s resolution early – between all the inevitable holiday cookies, turkey dinners, and my cupboard full of free Lindt chocolate, I need all the help I can get!

First Shopping Trip of the Month – November 6th

Saturday, November 8th, 2008

I’m pretty well stocked on food at the moment, so my first trip for the month was just a quick run to Safeway yesterday to get some milk & creamer:

Total Spent: $3.31
Total before coupons: $13.06
View receipt

Got:

1 gallon of milk
1 16 ounce bottle of Coffee Mate – On sale for $2.50, used a .75/1 catalina that I received the last time I bought Coffee-Mate at Safeway.
3 trial-sized packets of Airborne – on sale for $2.19, used three $2/1 coupons from the 9/7 Smart Source newspaper inserts. Free plus .31 cents overage each after doubles.
1 Zone bar – on sale for $1, and I used a $1 off coupon from the 9/7 Smart Source newspaper inserts. But I feel really bad – when I was checking through my inserts just now, I realized that this coupon expired on October 31st!!! I didn’t even think to check the expiration date!! No one else noticed either, so my coupon was scanned and doubled by another .50 cents. I’m sorry, Safeway!
1 Always pad – free with club card!

This was a pretty expensive trip, by my standards. I haven’t seen any unmissable deals so far this week. The “Home For The Holidays” promo is interesting, but I wasn’t wowed by any of the products listed in the ad. The good news is, there are a ton of participating products tagged all through the store. Safeway often has a “master list” of participating products for these store-sponsored catalina promos, and if you inquire at the customer service desk and they have it available, I guess sometimes they will make a copy for you. I’m going to look into this the next time I’m in there, or if another blogger gets the list and posts it, I will be sure to pass on the link. Once we know what all of the participating items are, it will be easier to identify any good deals.

I wouldn’t have even needed to buy the milk, except that the last gallon of milk I bought went bad sooner than I thought. I read the expiration date wrong in the store, and I thought it was good until next week…but no. I had to throw away about a third of a gallon. I really need to be careful when I buy milk at Walgreens – half the time the milk at my store is already expired when it’s on the shelf!

The deal with the Always pads is worth noting. Safeway has started offering free samples with your club card – there was a display of these in the feminine hygiene section. You can have one free sample per club card, or pay a small amount without a club card. The only problem was that instead of ringing up free, it came up .25 cents; but customer service quickly fixed this for me. They refunded me the quarter that I overpaid and marked the return on the original receipt, but I did not a get a receipt for the refund itself.

Next, I had to make a quick stop at Rite Aid. Forgive the terrible photo:

Total spent: $2.42 – no coupons, alas!
View receipt

Got 1 package of first aid gauze bandage

Not much I could do about this one. I needed first aid gauze for an owie, and had no gauze coupons, so I just got the cheapest one I could find.

Budget Total – October 2008

Thursday, November 6th, 2008

Here are my budget figures for October 2008. For the whole month, my total out of pocket expenditures came to:

$22.36

Yikes! I went $2.36 over budget. This happened at the very end of the month, when I was in such a rush getting groceries for my Halloween party, and didn’t have time to care.

So this $22.36 covered all the groceries for my two-person household – IE fruit, vegetables, meat, milk, cheese, eggs, flour, sugar, coffee, etc. This also factors in my Omaha Steaks order. In addition to feeding both of us, this amount also covered the food for my party, which fed 17 people – with major leftovers that we are still eating! My budget also covers household items, so in addition to food, this $22.36 paid for cleaning supplies, toiletries, makeup, miscellaneous household stuff like foil, and so on. I also got a few random things, such as stocking stuffers, party favors and prizes. Oh yeah, and .08 cents of this went to breast cancer donations at Safeway!
If you’d like a more detailed breakdown of what I bought, you can see photos and receipts of each shopping trip in the October archive. If you’re wondering what kind of food we ate, check out my new feature, Coupon Funded Menu Corner.

Throwing A Party With Coupons: Part II

Wednesday, November 5th, 2008

So here’s some photos of the menu that I served at my Halloween party. The spread fed 17 guests, and I have a TON of food left over. I always seem to overestimate how much I’ll need, but it’s better to have too much food than not enough!

Mummy Hot dogs! This is an annual staple at my Halloween party. This year, I made home made biscuit dough instead of using the canned crescent rolls. It tastes better but doesn’t look very mummy-ish.

Sadly, this was the only picture I took of the food before the party started. I got so caught up in hostessing that I totally forgot to get snaps until the party was over. So forgive the rest of these pics, since they’re of leftovers!

Lemon cupcakes! I made the cupcakes from scratch but cheated on the frosting – it’s canned Betty Crocker stuff that I got for free over the summer. For the decoration, I was trying to imitate this super cute bat cupcake from Woman’s Day magazine, but it didn’t quite work out. I was in such a hurry this year and I could not find miniature peanut butter cups anywhere, since I was shopping the night before Halloween – I guess it’s a pretty popular candy! So, I tried to substitute Junior Mints, and gave up after the first few I tried. Good thing I had the cute cupcake skewers! I found those along with the Halloween cupcake liners for about .50 cents on clearance ages ago.

Pumpkin bread, and a half-eaten bowl of candy. I adapted a breadmaker recipe for carrot bread, and just substituted canned pumpkin for the carrot. This bread is especially good when served with:

A vat of pumpkin soup! This picture is terrible, but the soup was delicious. I used this recipe, and the only change I made was that I omitted the celery. This is the first soup I’ve ever made – I usually don’t care much for soups, but I really loved this one. I’ve been eating the leftovers for lunch every day because I like it so well. Here’s a slightly more appetizing picture that I snapped of it yesterday:

We visited a pumpkin patch just before Halloween, and this was a great way to use up the insides of the pumpkin instead of just tossing it. I also put the seeds to good use:

Roasted pumpkin seeds are so yummy, and really healthy too. After carving the pumpkin, I rinsed these in a colander and tossed them in olive oil. I sprinkled them with salt and baked them on a cookie sheet until they had a nice crisp texture.

I told you these pictures were all of leftovers!! This is a seven layer “Graveyard dip”. I layered refried beans, homemade guacamole, salsa, black olives, fresh chopped tomatoes, cream cheese, and shredded cheese in a pan. Then I cut round tombstone shapes out of bread, and iced “RIP” on each one, sticking it into the dip to form a haunted scene. As you can tell, the dip was a big hit. I served it with tortilla chips and wheat thins.

Jack-O-Lantern toast! I had some packages of cheese slices that were free with coupons a few months back, so I cut faces into the slices and melted them onto Sara Lee bread – which was also free with coupons!

Not pictured are the various dishes of candy and the bowl of goldfish crackers that I also set out.

I also made goodie bags for each guest:

I made a TON of treat bags for both the guests and the trick-or-treaters that never came.

I also held a costume contest and a pumpkin carving contest. I gave away three Halloween-themed prizes in each category, wrapped in spooky bags that I got as filler items at Walgreens. All of the prizes and goodie bags were also funded by coupons this year.

I hope that everyone else had an equally fun Halloween!

New catalina deal at Safeway

Wednesday, November 5th, 2008

I just got my weekly Safeway sales flier in the mail today, and there is a new Safeway-sponsored catalina promotion starting today that runs through 11/30. The ad reads: “Home For The Holidays – Receive Reward Coupons every times you purchase participating products in a single transaction with your club card – look for items with participating tags. Get a $5 Reward coupon when you spend $20 or more. Get a $10 Reward Coupon when you spend $30 or more. Reward Coupons good on future purchases. Qualifying transactions must be participating items purchased in a SINGLE transaction. Limit one Reward Coupon per transaction, per day. Void Where prohibited. Some item exclusions may apply. Offer valid 11/5/2008 through 11/30/2008.”

Check out the ad online by going here and punching in your zip code. The ad shows some of the participating products, which are mostly baking supplies.

The neat thing about these promotions is that you can usually use manufacturers coupons on the participating items to lower the out of pocket cost and sweeten the deal. I’ll see what kind of coupon matchups I can come up with, and I’ll post back with some scenarios.

Throwing A Party With Coupons: Part I

Tuesday, November 4th, 2008

Every year, I throw a huge Halloween bash, and spend a lot of time cooking loads of food for it. Here’s the grocery run that I made the day before the party:

Total spent: $7.65 cash out of pocket, put 64.66 on 2 different gift cards
Total before coupons: $96.45

View receipt #2
View receipt #3
View receipt #4 – one of my items rang up twice, so they had to return $1 to my gift card

I didn’t use as many coupons as I might have normally, because I was in such a rush to get everything done for the party in time. But that’s okay, because I had a backup plan – my gift cards. I had one gift card that I earned for free for filling a prescription at Rite Aid, and a gift card for Walgreens that had my rebates loaded onto it. I’ve been able to slowly grow the amount on my Walgreens gift card and turn a profit by using coupons on rebate items, and by receiving a 10% bonus each time for opting to receive the rebates in gift card form.

There was one minor hitch in my plans at Fred Meyer, when I purchased 2 of the Glade plug-ins and only got one $4 catalina back. According to Common Sense With Money, the offer changed and was only printing one no matter how many you purchased. I had planned to whittle down my expenses by doing this deal a few times, but oh well!

So here’s what I picked up in anticipation of the shindig:

2 lipsticks
2 eyeliner pencils (the makeup was for my costume)
2 packages of fun sized Reeses Peanut Butter Cups
1 bag of fun sized Nestle Crunch – On sale for $1.88, used a $1/1 printable, which I believe is no longer available.
1 bag of fun sized Baby Ruth – Used same coupon as above – .38 cents a bag after coupons and doubles
A 5 pound bag of flour
4 cans of Swanson vegetable broth – used a coupon for .40 cents off four cans from the 9/28 Smart Source newspaper inserts
A 32 ounce bottle of Coffee Mate – used a .75/1 catalina that I received recently
2 Zone bars – on sale for $1, used two $1/1 coupons – free plus .50 cents of overage each after doubles
2 packages of Hot Dogs
1 Avocado
A 12 ounce bag of Starbucks coffee
1 big bag of gummy body parts
An 8 pack of Junior Mints
2 Glade Plug-Ins – used a “Buy One, Get One Free” coupon from the 9/28 Smart Source newspaper inserts
1 pound of Broccoli
1 pound of apples
1.63 pounds of organic bananas
1 jumbo head of garlic
1 can of refried beans
6 bags of plastic utensils – 144 pieces altogether
A huge bag of paper plates (I think there were 240 plates, but I threw away the bag)
A whole bunch of paper cups (There were 60 cups, I believe – I threw away the bag for this also)
3 pounds of butter
6 pounds of sugar
2 Halloween figurines
1 gallon of milk
1 skull goblet
1 box of baking soda
An 8 ounce bag of cheese
2 bags of tortilla chips
36 skull rings

Check back tomorrow for Part II, and I’ll show you the spooky buffet I served, how many guests it fed, and how much we have left over!

Cheap stuff at Victoria’s Secret

Monday, November 3rd, 2008

Click on over to Common Sense With Money to find out how to get 2 bras and a pair of panties for $16 at Victoria’s Secret! As underwear goes, this is a good deal, especially for this brand. Most VS bras that I’ve seen are $40 or more.

I also took advantage of the sweater deal that she mentioned, because I am in need of some sweaters now that we’re going into cold weather. I spent $39.99, which is a lot, but I got 2 bras, pair of undies, a sweater and a hoodie, so that’s $8 apiece. That’s comparable to Ross prices, so I was happy with it, especially for these practical items. I also shopped using Ebates, so I should be getting a small rebate back to sweeten the deal.

The sweater deal ends today, so act fast if you want to get in on it! I’m not sure when the deal ends on the bras.

Speaking of online deals, I got my Omaha Steaks order:

This deal worked out a little different than I had thought it would. I got my 8 hamburgers, but not the bonus burgers or cutlery set. I was informed by the company that I would not receive the free promotional items because you cannot combine special offers – they said that paying with certain tenders, such as a gift card, is considered a special offer. I wish it would have mentioned this during the checkout process, instead of successfully adding all the items, applying my gift card and processing the order without any errors or warnings. Obviously their checkout system needs some work – especially since other bloggers placed the same exact order and yet they received all of the items, including the freebies. And then, Omaha Steaks called me at 4 in the morning last Tuesday to tell me that my order would be late! Oh well, at least the burgers look super yummy!!
